Don't get caught out with your cabin air filter looking like this!

Did you know most modern cars have a cabin filter, which is located in behind your glovebox in most cars? We check cabin filters as part of our routine servicing.

Today, whilst performing a routine service on a new customers car, which is a Holden Commodore VE SS sedan, we came across this Cabin Air Filter.

Dirty Cabin Air Filter from Holden Commodore

From the looks of it, the Cabin Air Filter in this Holden Commodore hasn't been replaced in a very long time. We check the cabin filter in your car at every service we do, to prevent something like this happening.

The customer was completely unaware there is a filter inside the car and she was absolutely in a state of shock when we showed it to her. She couldn't believe she had been driving around with the filter that dirty and breathing in the dirty air. That being said, it isn't the worst cabin filter we've discovered while servicing cars. What is a Cabin Air Filter?

The air you breathe inside the car circulates through the cabin filter, whether it comes from outside when your settings are on fresh air or from the air conditioner when it’s on recirculate.

Is a cabin air filter neccessary?

Without an effective cabin air filter installed, the air inside your car can contain over 10 times more pollutants than the air outside. The cabin air filter is an essential part of your vehicle to prevent harmful irritants entering your car.

How will I know if my cabin air filter needs replacement?

Some of the signs you may notice when your cabin air filter needs changing:

  • Stale or damp smell in the cabin of your vehicle
  • Decrease in air flow inside your passenger compartment, even when the heating or cooling is on high
  • Noisey air vents - particularly whistling.
  • AC heating and cooling not working as well as usual

What happens if you don't change your cabin air filter?

If you don't change your cabin air filter it will become congested with dust and pollution. The cabin filters job is to filter out contaminants and absorb odours and harmful gases so it needs to be changed on schedule. If not done regularly, this may effect the efficiency of the cabin air filtration and your cars HVAC system.

How often should the cabin air filter be changed?

To ensure their effectiveness, cabin air filters should be replaced approximately every 15,000 km or at least once a year.
